In 2012, we had a busy year – we transitioned to a new Chief Executive Officer, developed a new strategic plan, tracked a typhoon, and passed a coral reef monitoring protocol. Some days were tough, most days were busy, and every day we were amazed, inspired, and humbled by the grandeur of our environment and our communities. Based on the recommendations of an external evaluation, and those of our Board, communities, and peers, we are taking steps to be financially sustainable, internationally relevant, and better at linking our research to education and management.

I am particularly thankful for, and humbled by, the support we received from our local communities in 2011 and 2012. Over 425 individuals, groups, and businesses donated to the Center in addition to generous contributions from states and the Olbiil Era Kelulau (OEK). Some gave a few dollars, some gave thousands, and every donation inspired us to keep working. Knowing that others have invested in the development of the Center, we invested in improving our operations. One example of how we are managing the Center’s assets more efficiently is that we’ve reduced our monthly electricity bill by over 50%.

Appreciating the fact that the Center’s work is unique and vitally important to the sustainability of Palau’s natural resources and the communities that rely on them, we strive to ensure that our research work provides needed information for leaders and coastal resource managers (and users) to make informed decisions and act quickly - not only to minimize negative impacts, but also to maximize opportunities that benefit both natural resources and communities. Our vision for our new 2013 strategy aptly describes our three core areas: people, science, and management. With your ongoing support, we continue to grow and strive to successfully do our part in protecting our islands’ natural assets.

We at the Palau International Coral Reef Center thank you for your support, funding, ideas, patience, persistence, and commitment over the years. We look forward to many more years of partnership, and to the wonderful discoveries the future holds. We are confident that with your continued support, we will be able to overcome any challenges that we will face in the future.
